Shelbyville Cop Charged With Drunk DrivingAn off-duty Shelbyville Police officer was allegedly drunk when he was involved in a one-car crash recently on County Road 400 N in Shelby County.
Major David Tilford, with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, says 24-year-old Aaron J. Calvert, of Shelbyville, was going east on County Road 400 N Sunday when he looked down to make a phone call and ran off the road. After leaving the roadway, Calvert struck a utility pole and slid down an embankment striking several trees and bushes. Tilford says the arresting officer noticed Calvert had a split lip that was bleeding and asked him if he needed medical attention. Calvert said he was fine. Tilford says the officer noticed the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on Calvert's breath. When asked if he had been drinking, Calvert told the officer he probably had four or five drinks. Calvert was giving a portable breath test. It recorded a breath alcohol content of .13 percent. Tilford says the officer took Calvert to the hospital for treatment after noticing him having a split lit. He was released. Calvert was then taken to the Shelby County Jail where he was remanded on the charges of dangerous OVWI and operating with a BAC of more than .08 percent.
