One-vehicle Crash Claims Columbus Man's Life

A Columbus man lost his life in a one-vehicle crash Thursday on State Road 46 in the area of County Road 400N in eastern Bartholomew County.

Major Todd Noblitt, with the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office, says when deputies arrived at the scene, they learned that 20-year-old Lefty R. Morales had been ejected from the vehicle. He sustained life threatening injuries and was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where he was pronounced dead.

The preliminary investigation reveals that the driver of the vehicle, 18-year-old Jared D. Johnson of Columbus, was traveling west on State Road 46 and became distracted when looked down at his iPod. Johnson’s vehicle began to travel off of the north side of the roadway when he jerked the steering wheel and overcorrected. The vehicle went into a skid before rolling three times and coming to rest on the south side of the roadway.

Johnson was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Morales, who was the front seat passenger, was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected as the vehicle rolled killing him. Two back seat passengers refused treatment at the scene.
