There is a new Columbus Township Trustee after Ben Jackson won a Friday afternoon election.
Jackson was sworn in Monday morning at the Bartholomew County Courthouse. He will finish the remainder of former Trustee Fred Barkes' term. Barkes resigned as trustee on Friday with about 18 months left on his term.
Jackson says the voting process was much different from what he was used too, as the race was decided by a group of GOP precinct committeemen. He says the evening began with seven candidates. One of those candidates dropped out before the first round of voting. From there, ballots were cast and the lowest vote getter was eliminated from further votes. Jackson says he won after the fourth ballot, as two candidates tied for the lowest vote total in one ballot.
Jackson says his goals for the trustee's office include meeting deadlines, maintain meticulous records and provide a friendly and ethical office where residents will feel comfortable coming to for help. He added that he wants to jump right in to the job and learn as much as possible as quickly as possible to insure that he is doing the best work for the township.
