A Butlerville man died Tuesday after drowning in a pond in Campbell Township.
The North Vernon "Plain Dealer-Sun" reports 28-year-old Lacy D. Smith III died around 8:30 p.m. at the pond on County Road 675 E just west of Nebraska. The paper reports he was fishing with family and friends when he drowned.
The Jennings County Sheriff's Office says Smith decided to swim across the lake and was unable to make it. Smith was pulled out of the water by people at the scene who started performing CPR on him. Efforts to revive Smith were unsuccessful.
Emergency personnel arrived on scene and took Smith to St. Vincent Jennings Hospital where he was pronounced dead by the Jennings County Coroner's Office. An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour.
County Coroner Gene Rudicel says they are making sure the drowning wasn't accidental. He says there could have been heart or health issues or other factors.
Smith was arrested on May 12 after the explosion of an alleged clandestine methamphetamine laboratory at his residence near Butlerville. Thirty-nine-year-old Brian E. Short died from burns suffered in the explosion and the fire that followed.
Smith initially was charged with murder in the case, which later was dropped, though he still faced several drug charges.
The investigation into the drowning continues.
