The drive to collect school supplies for low-income Bartholomew County residents is nearing a "critical" point. Diane Doup, with the Bartholomew County School Supply Assistance Program, says if you've been thinking about helping, "the time is now."
The group, currently in its 10th year of the school supply drive, helps collect materials and cash to provide children with needed supplies. Doup says the program is seeing about the same number of requests for assistance from previous years. Unfortunately, she says they only have about 50 percent of the resources necessary to supply every child. Doup says with only two weeks left in the drive, they need to raise roughly $20,000.
If you would like to help, Doup says you have a couple of options. If you wish to donate material items like a new backpack or folders, you can drop them off at specified drop-boxes across the county. While material donations are accepted, Doup says financial contributions go a long way. Thanks to the group's arrangements with area retailers, they are able to purchase supplies at about one-third the cost of retail. Financial contributions can be dropped off, or mailed to, Sans Souci, 1526 13th Street, Columbus, IN 47201. You are asked to write "school supplies" in the memo portion of your check or on the envelope.
