Vacant Home Demolition to Increase Size of Ninth Street Park

Columbus' Ninth Street Park is about to grow considerably.

Chris Schilling, the city's communications and program coordinator, says the park will start to gain green space on Friday when a vacant house on the southwest corner of the park is demolished. The park currently has no green space, and the property will increase the park's size by more than 20 percent.

A demolition ceremony will begin at 8 a.m. Friday with the ceremonial swing of a sledgehammer by Mayor Kristen Brown at 821 Wilson Street. The city of Columbus purchased the property in June with a $50,000 grant from the Heritage Fund - the Community Foundation of Bartholomew County.

Once the structure is removed, the land will be transformed into green space, opening up the park and improving its appearance.

The demolition is the latest step taken in the city's efforts to improve that area of Columbus.

"Adding green space to the Ninth Street Park will help further revitalize this area and give surrounding residents more room to enjoy the park and its amenities," Mayor Kristen Brown said. "The purchase of and demolition of this dilapidated house is a perfect example of how our community can work together to improve our neighborhoods."

Brian Eversman, owner of Eversman Construction, has volunteered to demolish the house at no cost to the city. The Bartholomew County Solid Waste Management District has agreed to waive tipping fees at the county landfill to dispose of the demolition debris.

The property will increase the total size of the Ninth Street Park to about half an acre, or about 20,500 square feet.
