Jackson County officials are dealing with overcrowding at their jail.
Sheriff Mike Carothers says that as of Thursday afternoon, there were 234 inmates in the jail that has a 172 bed capacity. He says the are currently putting bunks in to day rooms at the jail and sometimes putting three to a cell to deal with the overcrowding. The Sheriff adds they are looking at their options. These include the discussion of a bonding schedule, moving inmates to other jails and paying for their care and the possible expansion of the jail itself.
Carothers says they are looking at why there are so many inmates. He says the nature of the offenses the inmates are accused of necessitates lengthy stays at the jail. Carothers adds that many inmates are in jail on drug related crimes. He says even those not arrested specifically on drug charges may still be behind bars for crimes committed to support their habit.
Carothers says he will soon meet with other county officials to discuss ideas on dealing with the overcrowding. He adds that the final decision on what will be done to deal with the problem will fall to the Jackson County Commissioners.
