The sitting Jennings County Superior Court Judge and Jennings County Surveyor, elected as Democrats, have switched to the Republican Party.
The North Vernon newspaper "Plain Dealer-Sun" report that a former state representative and North Vernon City Council candidate also made the switch.
The Jennings County Republican Party has recently welcomed Judge Gary Smith, Surveyor Chad Ebinger, former State Rep. Dave Cheatham and former Democratic Party District 4 city council nominee Shana Richmond.
Smith, a former county prosecutor who was elected five times to that post as a Democrat, said he will run for re-election for a second six-year term next year as superior court judge on the Republican ticket. He told the paper that it was becoming more difficult for him to support the direction of the national Democrat Party.
Ebinger was re-elected as a Democrat to his second term last year as county surveyor.
Cheatham, one of the co-authors of the proposed state constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage in Indiana, told the "Plain Dealer-Sun" that he changed his party allegiance because of ideological reasons. He said his values "fit in better with the Republican Party."
Jennings County Democratic Party chairwoman Karen Snyder told the paper that she is disappointed, but added that she expects voters to continue flocking to the Democrat Party. She said that voters will turn away from Republicans because they want to "gut Social Security and Medicare." Snyder also accused the Republicans of declaring "war on women."
