Work on SR 252 Underway in Shelby County

Indiana Department of Transportation maintenance crews from the Columbus Subdistrict began chip sealing SR 252 between Interstate 65 and Flatrock in southern Shelby County Tuesday.

The schedule calls for three days of chip sealing-and two days of fog sealing-to complete this pavement preservation project along 25 lane-miles of east-west highway.

INDOT says the first step involves liquid asphalt being applied to the roadway. Then, small chips of limestone aggregate are placed on top. The process seals the pavement against moisture and ultraviolet rays, extending its service life. Officials say that safety for drivers is enhanced through renewed surface friction improving the roadway's skid resistance.

INDOT cites studies that show that every $1 spent on this kind of surface treatment saves $10 in road repairs and extended service life.

INDOT strongly advises motorists to drive with caution and at slow speeds on roads where chip seal has been freshly applied. Based on the schedule provided, work should be completed by the end of the week.
