A Jackson County man has been charged with felony theft in the disappearance of air-conditioning units at Ogilville United Methodist Church earlier this month.
A probable cause affidavit filed in Bartholomew County Circuit Court indicated that 34-year-old Joseph M. Ault, of Seymour, removed air conditioner coils from the church on July 9 and 12. That's according to our news gathering partners at "The Republic."
Ault stole the condenser coils and then sold the merchandise to an iron-and-metal-works business, according to the affidavit.
The Sheriff's Department said such thefts generally occur so thieves can salvage copper and other metals from air-conditioning units and sell the items for cash.
Officials say such thefts can often be thwarted by active neighborhood watch programs and adequate security lighting around equipment.
If convicted, Ault could get six months to three years in jail and pay a fine up to $10,000.
Ault was held in the county jail in lieu of $15,000 bond.
