Bartholomew County Sheriff Mark Gorbett has suspended three deputies for what he labeled "errors in judgment" during an investigation into the death of Cary Owsley.
Gorbett said Sgt. Dean Johnson, then-Detective Christie Nunemaker and Deputy E. DeWayne Janes all violated department procedures, failed to manage the death scene correctly or properly preserve evidence.
Sgt. Johnson was suspended for 10 days without pay and will receive remedial training on death scene investigations.
Nunemaker was suspended for 10 days without pay, has been reassigned to the uniform division and will receive remedial training on death scene investigations.
Dep. Janes was suspended for five days without pay and will receive remedial training on death scene investigations.
Sheriff Gorbett called these officers' mistakes "unfortunate and inexcusable." However, he stresses that nothing has been uncovered to overturn his department's determination that Owsley's April 7 death was a suicide.
