A Franklin man was injured after he fell asleep, drove all over the roadway, hit a few road signs, struck a telephone poll and then crashed into a rented home in the 6400 block of State Road 252 in Edinburgh Sunday morning.
The Johnson County Sheriff's Office says a report was called in around 9 a.m. that 74-year-old Clifton W. Davis was swerving and driving all over the road on U.S. 31. A sheriff's deputy caught up with Davis at U.S. 31 and Hospital Road, but Davis took off and continued east on State Road 252 in the wrong direction.
No one in the home was hurt when Davis crashed into it. When the deputy tried to approach the driver's side of Davis' truck, Davis put it in reverse and was speeding backwards and almost ran over the deputy. The deputy was able to get out of the way, grabbed his gun and told Davis to turn off the truck at gun point. Davis complied with the deputy and got out of the truck.
Davis was given a blood alcohol test, which turned up nothing. The sheriff's office says Davis complained of hip pain and was taken to Johnson Memorial Hospital. Doctors at the hospital said they were going to run some tests on Davis. A nurse said he was taking several medications.
Officials say this is the second time in the past month that 911 has been called to report Davis' driving.
