Radar Trailer Used to Help Manage County Traffic

The Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department is using a radar trailer to help the department manage traffic and gather driver data. Lt. Craig Weisner with the department says it's officially called a speed awareness trailer.

Lt. Weisner says the sheriff's department investigated 421 traffic accidents through the first seven months of the year. Two of them were fatal. He said speed is often a contributing factor to a crash. Weisner noted that if anything, the presence of the trailer reminds drivers to take it slow.

He says the department drops the trailer off at spots throughout the county. He notes that this helps to determine any "hot-spots" that may need extra policing. While there are regularly scheduled drop-offs, Weisner adds that residents can request to have the trailer placed in their neighborhood if they are concerned about unsafe driving. All they have to do is call the sheriff's department at 379-1729.
