Columbus Police arrested an Edinburgh man after a standoff on Friday at an apartment complex.
Columbus Public Safety Spokesman Lt. Matt Myers says investigators received information that 42-year-old Richard G. Myers was inside of an apartment in the Applegate Apartment Complex. He was wanted on a warrant out of Shelby County for manufacturing meth. Police believed Myers may have been carrying a handgun and has made statements in the past that he would not be taken alive.
In response to the possible threat, police cordoned off the area and Smith Elementary School located nearby was placed on lockdown. Authorities say the lockdown was done out of an abundance of caution and that at no point were students, teachers or administrators ever in any danger.
Police negotiators were able to get Myers to come out peacefully.
Investigators spoke to three other people that were inside the apartment with Myers. They were released shortly thereafter. Police have not located a firearm, but are still waiting for a warrant to search the apartment and a vehicle believed to have been used by Myers.
We will have additional updates as they become available.
