Columbus Mayor Kristen Brown is inviting local students to design the Mayor's greeting card that is sent out throughout the world during the holiday season.
Chris Schilling, with Community Development, says this year, Mayor Brown is asking students to create a design that features the Chaos I sculpture at The Commons.
Schilling says the Mayor's Holiday Card Design Contest encourages students in kindergarten through eighth grade to use their imaginations to draw a design that represents Columbus during the holiday season. Last year, more than 200 students participated in the contest, and all the entries were displayed at The Commons to help celebrate the holidays.
"Our holidays are made extra special when we see the creative talents of our young residents," Mayor Brown said. "I was delighted by the response to last year's contest, and greatly appreciate the efforts of our community's children to design the greeting cards that represent the City of Columbus during the holidays."
More than 1,000 greeting cards were mailed last year across the world, including to Germany, China, Japan and right here in Columbus. This year, four of the submitted designs will once again be chosen to be displayed on the Mayor's greeting cards, and all the entries will be showcased at The Commons.
Winners will be selected in four categories Kindergarten, First and Second Grades; Third and Fourth Grades; Fifth and Sixth Grades; and Seventh and Eighth Grades.
Guidelines for the contest include:
· Entries should be submitted on a plain, white sheet of 8 ½ x 11-inch paper.
· The Chaos I sculpture at The Commons should be featured in the design.
· Designs should be created with crayons, colored pencils or graphite.
· Entries must have the artist's name, grade, school and home phone number on the back of the drawing.
The deadline to submit entries is 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4 at the Mayor's Office at City Hall. Winners will be notified in mid-November.
