IU Health announced Thursday that 800 positions will be eliminated through layoffs and early retirements.
Employees received an email saying team members who jobs are impacted by this workforce reduction will be notified in early October and will be provided with severance and outplacement assistance.
Officials announced in January that the system set a goal of improving productivity by 25 percent - or roughly $1 billion dollars - over the next five years.
The email said so far the system hasn't been able to achieve its targeted cost savings and is significantly behind its budgeted operating performance due to declining reimbursement rates and inpatient volumes.
The cuts will affect the academic health center, IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, the North Central Region (IU Health North, Saxony and Tipton hospitals) and System Services.
