A second arrest has been made in the death of an 8-month-old Washington County boy.
An Indiana State Police detective arrested the baby's mother, 23-year-old Casey Crain of Salem, Friday at noon. Crain was arrested on one felony count of neglect of a dependent. She was taken into custody and booked in the Washington County Jail.
Crain's arrest came after the Sept. 9 arrest of her live-in boyfriend, 24-year-old Jamie James Lykins.
Lykins was arrested after detectives from the Indiana State Police Post at Sellersburg were able to gather enough evidence from interviews, Indiana State Police Crime Scene Investigators and the autopsy completed on the victim, Leelan Crain. Lykins was arrested and charged with one felony of neglect of a dependent, as well as a second felony of battery causing death.
Both arrests stem from an incident on the evening of Saturday, Sept. 7. At around 7 p.m., Leelan Crain was found unresponsive by his mother while the baby was supposed to have been taking a nap. Leelan's mother and her boyfriend took the child to St. Vincent's Hospital in Salem. Once at the hospital in Salem, Leelan was flown to the Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville. He was pronounced dead at around 1:40 a.m. on Sept. 8.
An autopsy was performed that same morning at the Kentucky Medical Examiner's Office in Louisville. The autopsy preliminarily determined the cause of death as blunt force trauma to the head. The official and final determination of the baby's cause of death will not be made until the full autopsy results are available.
State Police say this investigation is ongoing.
