The Bartholomew County Literacy Task Force Spelling Bee will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 5:30 p.m. at Columbus North High School.
Teresa Heine, director of elementary education for the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation, says proceeds will benefit the "Tots Reading Lots" program. The program supplies book to kids ages one to four and mails out two books three times a year so kids will have six books to start their own library at home.
Heine says reading is important for kids before they start school.
"Well what we know from research is that children that are read to a thousand hours before they come to kindergarten have a much greater chance of being fluent readers," Heine said. "And we also know that 90 percent of a child's brain is developed before they turn five. So we want to get words and books into their hands as early as we can."
Heine says each team will consist of four members and will include a proctor to make sure another team's speller is spelling words correctly.
The cost is $250 for a business team and $120 for nonprofit teams.
