Jennings County Emergency Management has been awarded $10,000 from the 2013 Homeland Security Grant Program by the State of Indiana.
According to Matt Alexander, the county's emergency management and 911 executive director, this was a competitive application grant program with a total of $300,000 being awarded statewide as $10,000 was the maximum amount each agency could receive.
Alexander says his office applied for funds to install a permanent "whole building" generator at the North Vernon/Center Township Fire Station located at 2001 N. Madison Ave.
This fire station houses equipment from North Vernon and Center Township. The fire department responds to calls within the city of North Vernon as well as Center and Sandcreek Townships. They are the busiest department in the county. They routinely respond to Vernon, Spencer, Geneva, and Campbell Townships on runs as well.
Alexander says this generator will be able to power the entire building and will greatly enhance disaster operations during prolonged power outages. Firefighters will be able to respond quicker during power outages and emergency officials will be able to use this building as an Emergency Operations Center during disaster situations should the need arise.
Jennings County Emergency Management has also been awarded $5,179.77 as a result of their high score in the 2012-2013 State Assessment of its Emergency Management Program.
Alexander says this award is based on a score of 232 or more points in the assessment that was completed on June 30. Jennings County had a score of 296 and scored in the top half of the district.
The State Assessment looks at things such as the different written emergency plans that are in place, Emergency Operations Centers in place in the county and their emergency plans, county participation in regional disaster planning, Emergency Management Staff training levels, emergency communication capabilities, and attendance at state level trainings.
This grant money will be used to purchase an overhead projector and screen as well as radio communications equipment.
