The Columbus City Council has given initial approval to the reinstatement of a Public Information Officer for the Columbus Fire Department.
Fire Chief Dave Allmon says the time has come to have a dedicated PIO for his department. Columbus Public Safety Spokesman Lt. Matt Myers has been running PIO duties for both the city police and fire departments since early this year when the fire department's PIO was cut. The cutting of that position coincided with the then fIre department CIO being out for an extended period due to a leave of absence.
Allmon says the PIO position would hold a rank of Lieutenant. He added that he has a few candidates in mind, but did not want to pursue the issue until the city council acted.
The city council voted to approve the change on first request. A second reading is expected Nov. 19.
