The Columbus Police Department has a new officer.
Mayor Kristen Brown administered the oath to 22-year-old Robert Mitchell during Tuesday's Board of Works meeting at City Hall. Mitchell, a native of Fishers, holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and psychology from Indiana University.
Columbus Police Chief Jason Maddix says Mitchell attended the Indiana University Police Academy during the summer of 2012 and graduated second in his class. He is undergoing in-house training at the police department and will begin the department's 14-week field training program shortly thereafter. Mitchell is expected to begin working on his own in March.
"Officer Mitchell is highly qualified with his educational background and academy certification," Maddix said. "We are excited to have him join our team."
The hiring of Officer Mitchell fills the last opening at the police department. Maddix says more openings are expected at the first of the year. He added that the department will begin accepting applications soon for a testing process in early 2014.
Those interested in a career with the police department are encouraged to check the department's website regularly at www.columbus.in.gov/police.
