A Mooresville woman died in a single-vehicle crash in Brown County early Monday morning.
The Brown County Sheriff's Department says that 25-year-old Meagan Horton was killed in the crash. According to officials, at 2:40 a.m.,Deputy Gregory Pittman responded to a vehicle off the road in a ditch near 6244 Railroad Road, near the intersection of State Road 135 North.
Pittman found that a car had struck a tree with massive damage to the driver door. Horton was pinned in the vehicle and appeared to be unresponsive and not breathing. Deputy Josh Stargell, of the Nashville Police Department, arrived to assist. Together, the officers were able to break the passenger side driver windows and part of the front windshield. Deputy Pittman checked Horton for vital signs, but found none. It took over two hours to remove Horton's body from the wreckage.
A passenger, identified as 25-year-old Joshua D. Stine of Mooresville, had left the scene before officers arrived was found at a nearby house trying to get help. He was checked by emergency responders and transported to Johnson County Hospital complaining of lower abdomen pain.
Deputy Coroner Earl Piper pronounced Horton dead at the scene, likely due to massive head trauma. Authorities say speed was a factor and alcohol tests are pending on the driver. The accident remains under investigation.
