A judge in Bartholomew County may decide Wednesday if the body of Cary Owsley can be exhumed from the Garland Brook Cemetery in Columbus in order for a private autopsy to be done out-of-state to determine if his April 7 shooting death was a suicide or not.
Owsley's sister, Cheryl Owsley Jackson, has told numerous media outlets that she believes her brother didn't commit suicide. Jackson has even criticized Bartholomew County Coroner Larry Fisher's suicide ruling and the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department's handling of the death investigation that led to three deputies being suspended for what Sheriff Mark Gorbett called "errors in judgment" in the investigation.
Jackson told our news gathering partners at "The Republic" last month that her brother would have never committed suicide and still wants his body exhumed in order to find the true cause of his death.
Fisher told the paper then that he stands by his ruling in Owsley's death saying he wanted "to protect the county's best interest." Fisher added that he didn't see any reason to exhume the body saying "it's not going to change anything."
Wednesday's hearing is set for 1:30 p.m. in Bartholomew Circuit Court.
