Jennings County Schools are considering moving from their traditional school calendar.
Superintendent Dr. Terry Sargent says the board is looking at three options. They include staying on the current calendar, moving to a balanced calendar, or a third option - going to a "modified" balanced calendar. Sargent says that a balanced calendar will keep students in class for the same number of days, but provides for more breaks throughout the year while shortening the summer break.
Sargent says the school corporation is considering the change due to recent studies that show that moving to some kind of a balanced calendar is good for students. In particular, the studies indicate that reducing the length of time for a summer break help students to retain knowledge from the previous year.
Sargent stresses that no decision has been made. However, he says he expects a decision in plenty of time to implement any changes for the 2014-15 school year.
