Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a tree stand incident that happened early Tuesday afternoon near Camp Atterbury.
Officials say 38-year-old Steven Bishop Jr., of Indianapolis, was stepping onto his tree stand when a strap securing the stand to the tree broke causing it to drop out from underneath him.
Bishop fell 20 feet to the ground below. He was wearing a safety harness, but had not yet secured it to the tree. He was able to call for help by using his cell phone.
Bishop was transported to IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis by ambulance. He is in fair condition and is being treated for an injury to his back.
Indiana Conservation Officers would like to remind all hunters to always wear a safety harness when climbing into, hunting from, and climbing down from an elevated tree stand and always use a haul rope or line to haul equipment into and down from a tree stand.
