Two Washington County men were arrested on drug-related charges following a brief police pursuit early Wednesday morning in Jackson County.
Jackson County Sheriff Mike Carothers says around 2:50 a.m., the sheriff's office received a call about a speeding vehicle approaching Brownstown on State Road 135. The caller believed the car was going in excess of 85 mph. Police attempted to find the vehicle.
Moments later, Reserve Deputy Brad Barker found a silver passenger car going east on U.S. 50 leaving Brownstown. Barker reached speeds of 90 mph, but was not able to catch the speeding car. Seymour Police were notified that the car was heading toward the city limits. Officers were able get the car to stop near Airport Road and Tipton Street in Seymour.
During the traffic stop, police learned that the driver, Christopher David Benter of rural Washington County, was wanted out of Hendricks County on drug-related charges. While police were detaining Benter, they found 6 grams of marijuana. He was arrested for possession of marijuana and on the warrant.
Benter's passenger, Clay Allen Elkins, was also charged with possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, possession of a syringe and possession of a controlled substance after those items were found on him by police.
Both men were taken and booked into the Jackson County Jail without incident.
