A North Vernon man was arrested on New Year's Day after an incident of domestic violence.
Maj. Jerry Shepherd, with the Jennings County Sheriff's Department, says deputies arrested 36-year-old Jarel Haines, of 1916 Country Manor, after he allegedly beat his girlfriend and attacked her with a knife. The victim had severe head and facial injuries as a result of the alleged attack.
Shepherd said that authorities learned of the incident after the victim showed up at the sheriff's department looking for help. Officers conducted an investigation and later went to the home where they took Haines into custody.
Haines is facing felony charges of aggravated battery, criminal confinement and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon. He is also facing misdemeanor charges of interfering with the reporting of a crime and possession of marijuana.
Haines is being held in the Jennings County Jail on $80,055 bond.
