Another blast of winter weather is expected this weekend. With that, authorities are urging you to take all necessary precautions.
Jackson County Sheriff Mike Carothers says the area is expecting extreme and dangerous conditions. With that, travel may be impossible. Carothers urges everyone to make sure they have enough food and water inside their homes. It is also a good idea to make sure you have enough medication, both prescription and over the counter, to get you through early next week.
Carothers adds that travel will be very difficult, if at all possible. If you have to travel, you are urged to use an abundance of caution and to make all necessary preparations. Drivers and passengers should dress warmly and carry items like blankets, gloves, an ice scraper, snacks, water and fully charged cellphone, among others.
You should also take steps to insure your home is as comfortable and efficient as possible. Make sure your furnace filter has been changed and that all vents are clear from any blockage. Any issues with the furnace itself should be addressed before Saturday night.
You also need to take steps to insure your water supply is continuous. With record cold temperatures expected, you need to do what you can to avoid burst pipes. It is a good idea to insulate your water pipes and to keep a small, steady stream of water flowing. You should turn the cold water on from the faucet farthest away from your water heater.
For updated road and weather conditions, listen to state and area media. You are strongly urged to not call law enforcement for this information. Authorities are asking for these lines to be kept open so that emergency phone calls can get through and be answered as soon as possible.
