While meth lab busts statewide increased last year for the seventh consecutive year, Bartholomew and other nearby counties recorded significant declines.
"The Greensburg Daily News" is reporting that law enforcement agencies in the state uncovered 1,808 meth labs in 2013, up nearly 5 percent from 2012. The report by Boris Ladwig went on to say that seizures since 2006 have increased 125 percent.
The number of meth-related arrests and the number of children removed from homes with meth labs also increased, said First Sergeant Niki Crawford, of the Indiana State Police Meth Suppression Section.
Meth lab busts in Bartholomew County last year fell 19 percent. In Decatur County, lab busts fell 35 percent. The county also experienced its lowest total since 2007. Neighboring Shelby County saw a similar decline. Lab busts remained virtually unchanged in Jennings County.
The report went on to say that since 2001, Bartholomew County ranked first in meth lab busts, with 635. Police have seized 493 meth labs in Decatur County, the sixth-most among the state’s 92 counties.
