The Columbus Police Department (CPD) is investigating a scam involving purchases being made with rolled coins.
CPD Lt. Matt Myers says the department has received a number of complaints about a black male attempting to make purchases at local businesses using rolled coins. The suspect, described as being in his 30's or 40's, will place the correct, higher value coins on the edges of the coin rolls. However, the middle of the rolls are filled with pennies. The suspect will then receive change back that is higher than the amount actually given to the cashier.
Myers says this scam has been reported at four businesses in the city. Police believe the same man made an unsuccessful attempt Tuesday night at the Circle K on Jonathan Moore Pike that was hit in January. Myers says that Culver's and Jimmy John's have also been a targets of this scam.
Detectives are currently in the process of trying to obtain surveillance video of the scamming suspect. We will share that information once it is made available.
Anyone with information about these crimes is asked to contact Det. Sgt. Tom Foust at 376-2642. Myers stresses that information can be left anonymously.
