The Bartholomew County Commissioners approved a plan to do away with voting precincts and implement vote centers instead.
Bartholomew County Clerk Tami Hines, along with members of a commission tasked with looking at the issue, spoke in favor of the move. Under the proposal, county residents would no longer be tied to a specific location where they would have to cast a ballot on election day. Instead, there would be a total of 18 vote centers strategically placed throughout the county. Voters would be free to go to the vote center most convenient for them.
Hines says state law requires counties that utilize vote enters to have at least 12 of them. She says the county's best guess is to start with 18. Hines added that there is a good chance that the county will need fewer than that, but she would rather have too many than not enough.
The vote centers will go in to effect in 2015. This year's elections in Bartholomew County will remain under the precinct system.
