A Jennings County man was arrested early Tuesday morning after allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase in a stolen vehicle.
Madison Chief of Police Dan Thurston says that Jefferson County Central Dispatch dispatched information late Monday night regarding stolen vehicle from North Vernon. At approximately 1:40 a.m. on Tuesday, Patrolman Dylan Barnes observed a vehicle matching the description on Clifty Drive. Barnes caught up to the vehicle and noticed the license plate matched that reported on the stolen vehicle.
Thurston says Barnes then activated his emergency lights to execute a traffic stop on State Road 7. Barnes exited his patrol car and ordered the driver to shut off the vehicle. At this time, the driver accelerated at a high rate of speed away from the officer.
Barnes radioed in the pursuit and began pursuing the vehicle. Speeds of between 80 and 95 mph were reported while the chase proceeded through Dupont and continuing north. Barnes reported that the suspect continued to drive dangerously as he allegedly passed another vehicle while on a hill crest and a double yellow line.
The pursuit then entered Jennings County. The stolen vehicle turned right onto County Road 500 South, where the suspect vehicle reportedly ran a stop sign and jumped a railroad track, nearly losing control. Police say the suspect vehicle then turned left onto County Road 500 East. Due to the speed of the vehicle and ice on the roadway, the vehicle did not make the turn and drove into a ditch.
The subject quickly exited the vehicle and began to flee on foot. Barnes exited his vehicle and began a pursuit. Barnes was able to catch up to him and was detaining him when backup arrived.
Barnes arrested 21-year-old Corey A. Nolan, of North Vernon. He was booked in the Jefferson County Jail on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, resisting law enforcement - fleeing in a vehicle, resisting law enforcement - fleeing on foot and operating while suspended with a prior conviction of operating while suspended.
