One person is dead and another in custody after a standoff Monday morning in Taylorsville.
Indiana State Police received information Sunday night that two people were staying in the Taylorsville area, one of whom was wanted on a warrant for armed robbery. At about 4:50 a.m., members of the Indiana State Police Response Team verified that the pair were in a room at the Red Roof Inn in Taylorsville. At about 5:15 a.m., the armed robbery suspect, 26-year-old Zachary Baker, of Waterford, MI, surrendered to authorities.
The second man, 44-year-old Richard Morris, also of Waterford, MI, refused to emerge. ISP Sgt. Noel Houze says that Morris barricaded himself inside the hotel room. Police found out that Morris, who was Baker's step-father, had no outstanding warrants. However, he did have previous violent felony convictions. Police also had information that led them to believe he was in possession of a gun. Authorities ultimately received a warrant for Morris' arrest, but before they could move in, he fatally shot himself at about 8:30 a.m.
Houze says the investigation is ongoing. We'll have more details as they become available.
