Police Help Deliver Baby

North Vernon police are crediting an officer with helping a woman deliver a baby Tuesday morning.

Rescue workers were called to a house on Hoosier Street on a report that a resident there needed medical help, said Officer Justin Black, spokesman for the North Vernon Police Department. On the way to the call, dispatchers were told that a woman in her 20s was in labor.

Sgt. Keith Messer of the police department was first emergency worker on the scene and minutes after he arrived he helped the woman give birth. Black and Officer Todd Beam also assisted at the scene.

Black said the mother and child were transported to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour by ambulance and are in good condition. Their names of the mom and the newborn are not yet available.
