Lt. Matt Myers, spokesman for Columbus Police Department, says police were called to the Whitfield Place store at around 4 p.m. Wednesday after a man was seen by the store's loss prevention officers taking items from the store without paying for them.
The store security followed the man to a car in the parking lot, but the man would not respond to them. They called police, Myers said.
"That was not his vehicle," Myers said. "That vehicle was left there from some people that were traveling on south on (Interstate) 65.
"During the investigation police made contact with the registered owner of the vehicle... they did not know this individual and nobody should be in that vehicle."
Eric Long, 32, of Scottsburg was arrested on a felony charge of theft and a misdemeanor charge of unlawful entry of a vehicle.
Also found in the car were items taken from the store including a car battery, vacuum cleaner and a quilt, Myers said.
