Police seeing increase in thefts from vehicles

Columbus police say they are seeing an increase in thefts from vehicles as warmer weather arrives.

Lt. Matt Myers, spokesman for Columbus Police Department, said most of the activity has been happening in an area between Gladstone Ave. to Marr Road and south of 10th Street to Indiana Avenue. There have also been some thefts downtown.

Victims are reporting that their vehicles are being broken into and items stolen such as purses, electronic equipment and wallets. Police are reminding residents to keep property of value out of sight when stored in vehicles. Also, most of the vehicles that were entered were left unlocked prior to the thefts. Myers says to make sure to keep your vehicle locked when parked.

Myers also said that some people are finding broken windows and slashed tires.

Police are increasing their patrols in the affected areas, but Myers also encouraged people to report suspicious activity in their neighborhoods to the Columbus Police Department  by calling 812-376-2600 or 812-379-1689.
