Town marshal injured in cycle crash

Hartsville's town marshal was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash yesterday in Columbus.

Lt. Matt Myers, spokesman for Columbus Police Department, says that 64-year-old Alan "A.J." Ross, was injured at 3:47 p.m. when his Harley Davidson was struck by an SUV driven by 21-year-old Destiney A. Spurlock of Greensburg. Spurlock was on her way to work and was making a left hand turn at State Street and Gladstone Avenue.

Ross was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, Myers said.

"We do want to remind ... all motorcyclists, please wear a helmet," Myers said. "Your chances of survival if you are invovled in an accident greatly increase when you protect your head with a helmet."

Spurlock didn't see Ross on his motorcycle, Myers said. He said that with the early spring weather, drivers should pay extra attention for motorcyclists.

Ross was flown by LIfeLine helicopter to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Among his injuries, he suffered a dislocated shoulder, a severe gash to his head and he is scheduled to go into surgery later today for a broken pelvis, Myers said.
