A Columbus girl died this weekend after being partially thrown from a vehicle during a crash.
According to our news-gathering partners at The Republic, Bartholomew County Sheriff's deputies were called to a traffic accident at the intersection of County Roads 550W and 250S, at 11:47 p.m. Saturday. An SUV was inverted, and a female passenger, 17-year-old Delanie V. Scroghan of Newton Street, had been partially thrown from the vehicle and was unresponsive.
The vehicle, driven by 17-year-old Ashlee Litchfield, of Columbus, went off the right side of the roadway and traveled down a steep embankment, about 45 feet before the vehicle rolled onto its passenger side shattering the passenger side windows. Scroghan was a front-seat passenger and was not wearing a seat belt, according to the report.
There was moderate patchy fog in the area at the time of the crash, according to a release from the sheriff's department. Neither excessive speed, nor alcohol, nor drugs nor texting appear to have been factors in the crash, according to the department.
