Donner Center in Columbus was evacuated Thursday afternoon after smoke was discovered within the building.
Capt. Mike Wilson, spokesman for the Columbus Fire Department, says that firefighters were dispatched to the parks building on 22nd Street at 2:18 p.m. yesterday after staff reported that they they could see and smell smoke inside the building.
Wilson says that firefighters found that a construction crew working on the roof of the building were making repairs using a torch and sealant materials. Battalion Chief Mike Compton said that the crew was working near an air handling unit, and the smoke was entering the building through duct work.
Firefighters used a thermal imaging camera to make sure that there was no fire between the ceiling and the roof. No damage was found and workers were soon able to reenter the building.
