A Franklin Street house that had been divided into apartments was destroyed yesterday evening by a fire.

No one was injured but 14 people are homeless.

Capt. Mike Wilson, spokesman for the Columbus Fire Department, says that firefighters were called to the home in the 900 block of Franklin Street at almost 7 p.m. yesterday. When firefighters arrived they found that the entire front of the home was in flames.

Firefighter searched all nine of the apartments and began battling the blaze inside the home and out, but it continued to grow.

At about 7:30 p.m., Captain Andy Lay ordered a defensive attack because the heat was too much for firefighters inside the home. Firefighters put water on all four corners of the home and used aerial trucks to apply water from overhead as it continued to burn.

Wilson says the house is a total loss and estimated the value at about $135,000.
