Columbus Firefighters battled a large plastics fire Monday on the city's east side. It was reported mid-morning at the Faurecia plant at 601 Gladstone Ave.

Columbus Fire Department Spokesman Capt. Mike Wilson says that firefighters were dispatched to a rubbish fire at the scene at 10:16 a.m. He says that Columbus Fire Department Battalion Chief Tim Hughes was the first firefighter to arrive on the scene, approximately one minute later. The fire was located on the northeast corner of the plant grounds in an exterior storage area.

Wilson says that when firefighters arrived, they found approximately 6,000 square feet of storage containers fully involved in the blaze. Many of the plastic containers were stacked on top of one another. As the containers burned, automotive parts spilled to the ground below.  Thick black smoke billowed from the scene as firefighters applied water to the melting plastic.

Several homes along State Street were evacuated as a precaution. No injuries were reported among firefighters, Faurecia staff, or nearby residents.

Battalion Chief Hughes deemed the fire under control at 10:45 a.m.  Areas of isolated fire were still visible as firefighters attempted to sift through the debris. Melted plastic materials made reaching the pockets of fire difficult. Crews deployed a ground monitor fire hose to apply copious amounts of water over the area. Our hope was that we could effectively cool the plastics or reach the seat of the fire. Faurecia staff assisted firefighters and used a plow tractor to move debris so that firefighters could reach hot spots. Firefighters were on the scene for a total of four hours.

Faurecia management said the fire was discovered by a forklift operator working in the storage area. Company officials told fire investigators that the cost of materials damaged in the fire was close to $250,000. They estimated that it would take approximately one week to replace the lost product.

The fire is currently under investigation and a cause has not yet been determined.
