Redevelopment Commission approves Crump study

The Columbus Redevelopment Commission met Monday night. Among the items on the agenda, a plan to help determine the feasibility of the historic Crump Theater having a future in the city.

Bob Crider, a member of the Crump Steering Committee, presented a resolution to the Redevelopment Commission that would hire Danielle McClelland to complete a detailed business plan for the theater. "The Crump is a big project in terms of dollars and complexity," said Crider. Because of that, he said it is imperative to have McClelland on the job.

McClelland, who lives in Bloomington, is a professor at Indiana University. She is also the Executive Director of the Buskirk-Chumley Theater in that city and has been with it since 2001. Crider says McClelland has invaluable experience, citing her tenure with the theater, which included a period of difficulty in making it solvent. He says the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, which seats around 500 people, now operates 250 days per year and has an annual budget of $600,000. Crider says that is the kind of experience the Crump desperately needs.

Prior to establishing roots in Bloomington, McClelland lived and worked in Bartholomew County. She served as Program Director of the Columbus Area Arts Council and has experience programming, programming and managing events in this area.

The Redevelopment Commission voted unanimously to engage the services of McClelland. The study will cost the city $18,500.
