An alleged domestic violence victim was rescued by Columbus Police Thursday after she used the area's 911 text system.
Sgt. Matt Harris, with the Columbus Police Department, says that officers responded to the 900 block of Chestnut Street at about 3 a.m. in regards to a domestic disturbance. Harris says the victim, who could not speak to dispatch out of fear for her own safety after being threatened with a knife, successfully utilized the Text to 911 system to provide information to law enforcement. The suspect, 43-year-old William D. Booker, was located inside the residence by officers a short time later and taken into custody. He was booked in the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of intimidation with a deadly weapon and Domestic Battery.
Harris says that the Text to 911 program began being utilized in March. The system is used several times daily by dispatchers according to Julie Pierce, Deputy Director of the Bartholomew County Operations Center.
