Council seeks more details on Mill Race ampitheater possiblities

Columbus City Council members said they were impressed with proposals to revamp the amphitheater in Mill Race Park and wanted more details.

Last night the City Council heard two proposals from Peter Rutti with Westlake Reed and Leskosky,a design firm that has worked on similar projects around the country. The agency was selected by a local steering committee after a request for proposals last year.

Rutti laid out the firm's two options, both of which would revamp the stage, increasing its height, updating its electronics and other technology and lift the equipment out of potential flood waters. Rutti said that after the firm's first vision of the project that it submitted for the request for proposal process, it began interviewing organizations that put on concerts nationwide to hone the proposal and to meet the needs of modern performers.

Both proposals would also include a secondary building that would house dressing rooms and mechanical equipment.

Council members said they were interested in a temporary contract with the agency to further develop the plans.  So far, the firm has done all of its work in Columbus for free to show how much it wants to do a project here.

Mayor Kristen Brown said that part of that development should be estimates on how much it would cost to maintain a new. Brown also said that she wanted the Columbus Park Foundation to approach potential donors to fund ongoing maintenance. Construction, which could run $2 to $4 million, could be paid for from economic development income taxes, Brown suggested, but ongoing maintenance could be difficult considering the city's maintenance budgets are already strapped for funds.
