Columbus could scale back its proposals for a State Street improvement plan, but still partner with the Indiana Department of Transportation to make major improvements there.
The dream plan of city planners, and residents and business owners who took part in the planning process was for more than $8 million in improvements in the area. However that would have involved INDOT agreeing to narrow the street to make room for more trails, and turning over state funding for the city to spend on improvements. City Engineer Beth Fizel told City Council last night that INDOT told city officials yesterday it wasn't interested in doing that.
Scaling back the plan to more than $1.7 million would reduce the scope of the project but it would still allow for sidewalks and pocket parks along the East Columbus corridor. The city would need to decide in the next few weeks if it wants to try to piggyback on a street resurfacing project that INDOT has planned.
