Redevelopment Commission approves work on airport property

The Columbus Redevelopment Commission met Monday night at City Hall. Business included hearing a request from Columbus Municipal Airport Director Brian Payne for money to begin development of a major subdivision plat on airport-owned property at the corner of Poshard Drive and Central Avenue.

Payne says improvements need to be planned and implemented before student housing on other airport-owned property nearby is completed next summer. The property discussed Monday night would be utilized by companies providing retail, fast food and other businesses attractive to students and young adults. Payne says there has been interest shown from some companies who would like to lease pieces of the land. However, until the property is developed, it's a moot point.

The commission agreed to Payne's request for $23,000 for survey and design work. Once that is done, he will return to the commission to ask for TIF dollars to help develop the property. Part of that development calls for the extension of Vickers Drive to Poshard. If all goes well, Payne says he expects road work to begin in this area next Spring.
