The North Vernon City Council voted to approve work on a pair of railroad crossings during its meeting Monday night.
Mayor Harold "Soup" Campbell explained that the work will take place at the CSX crossing on Fifth Street and another at the Madison Railroad crossing on Madison Avenue. Total cost for the projects is $663,786, with the Madison Avenue crossing taking up a little more than half of the budget. Mayor Campbell noted that the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will be funding about half of the cost. He says the city had to find the money to match INDOT's contribution. Mayor Campbell added that this work has been needed for sometime and that he is happy that the project is officially ready to go.
Campbell says that he expects work to begin before the end of this year.
